Spain and Italy chosen as hosts of 2020 World Championship Qualification and Top 8 Tournaments

News

IFCPF are happy to announce that the hosting rights of the 2020 IFCPF World Championships Qualification Tournament and the 2020 IFCPF World Top 8 Tournament have been awarded to Spain and Italy. The Federació Esportiva Catalana de Paralítics Cerebrals (FECPC) will function as host of the Qualification Tournament in the Spanish city of Sant Cugat, where the 2018 U19 World Cup was played. In Italy the organization will be in the hands of Federazione Italiana Sport Paralimpici e Sperimentali (FISPES), who will host the World Top 8 tournament on the island of Sardegna.

Both have submitted excellent bids that were reviewed by the IFCPF Technical Committee. Their proposals were approved by the Board. Both organizing committees will be supported by a regular reporting process.

The 2020 World Championship Qualification will be played from June 17th to July 2nd of 2020. The World Top 8 Tournament will be held from 20 till 28 of May 2020.

Reactions from organizers

Ismael Sánchez of the FECPC looks forward to Spain hosting their third big tournament: "It is another opportunity for us to develop CP Football in Catalunya and in Spain. For me it is a very special tournament, because the development teams will all be here to participate and be involved in IFCPF for the very first time. You never know what will happen in the end.

The tournament will be held in Sant Cugat, just outside of Barcelona. We will play on artificial grass in a venue where we have held two tournaments before: the 2013 CPISRA Intercontinental Cup and the 2018 IFCPF World Cup U19. We scheduled the tournament in June and the beginning of July, which will allow us to involve the people of Sant Cugat more in the tournament. Schools are still open, so that will help us to create a good atmosphere for the tournament."

Claudio Gerardi of FISPES is very pleased that Italy will be hosting the Top 8 tournament: “It’s an honour for Italy to host the top 8 countries of the world. It is a great opportunity to show CP Football to the people of Sardegna. It’s good for the development of CP Football in Italy as well. We welcome the CP Football family to the island of Sardegna, which for me is the Caribbean of Italy.”
