Day One Recap: DeLillo stars USA and Canada Face Off in Inaugural Game of 2026 Men's World Cup

News

The USA have dominated rivals Canada in the inaugural game of the 2026 IFCPF World Cup, winning 7-0.

The USA struck first in the 9th minute, with forward #8 John Sullivan shooting into the left corner.

In the 16th minute, Canada's Joel Murphy fouled Sullivan, who went down, perhaps worrying Team USA. He is only one of two FT1 players on the U.S. team, and IFCPF regulations require one FT1 player on each team at all times.

In the 22nd minute of the first half, Canada's Joel Murphy went down with an injury and went to the bench to be seen. Still, thankfully, he quickly returned to the match and helped. In the 26th minute, Brendan McGeachan shot the ball just wide as he tried to hit the far right corner, but put a little too much power on it.

Midfielder Frankie Lowery scored the U.S.'s second goal in stoppage time to close the first half.

The second half was as dominant for the USA as the first, but Canada found new life in their competition.

Brendan McGeachan again went to shoot aggressively, and it looked like he was about to score, but it was only slightly off the post in this nail-biting action.

At the midway point of the second half, Cameron DeLillo scored in the 47th minute. Only a minute after the DeLillo goal, Ben Lindau scored in the 48th minute. Brendan McGeachan had another close effort in the 50th minute, and for a moment, Canada looked like it was on the USA's toes.

But Cameron DeLillo shut down those thoughts when, in the 54th minute, bundling home after a ricochet from Adam Ballou's free kick.

DeLillo earned the first hat trick of the tournament, shutting down Canada's confidence and late-game composure. He then scored his fourth goal in stoppage time to round out the scoring.

In stoppage time, Keagan Carron's shot was blocked by Sean Boyle to complete his clean sheet.
